Safeguarding – What does this mean?

The Education Service and schools work together to make sure all pupils are safe, feel secure, and are supported. Safeguarding means looking after the physical and emotional wellbeing of children and young people.

Why safeguarding matters

Schools have a duty to keep you safe and to help if something is worrying you. This includes protecting you from harm, abuse, bullying, or neglect.

Who can help?

Every school has:

·         a Designated Safeguarding Person – a member of staff who is there to listen and help

·         a Deputy – someone else to help if the designated person is not available

You can talk to these people if you are worried about yourself or someone else.

What do schools do?

Schools:

·         create a safe environment for learning

·         take all concerns seriously

·         work with other services such as Social Services, Health, and the Police

·         teach pupils how to stay safe and how to ask for help

Types of harm

Schools are aware of different types of harm, including:

·         physical harm

·         emotional harm

·         sexual harm

·         neglect

·         bullying or financial abuse

Everyone’s responsibility

Staff have a duty to listen, help, and share concerns safely. If you are worried, you are not alone – help is available. Look at our website.
